East Darling Harbour
Nordon Jago Architects design entry for East Darling
Harbour masterplan. We were one of the finalists.
The existing reclaimed landform is an industrial
treatment of the Sydney foreshore that does not exploit
the potential that the site offers.
It forms a rigid barrier between water and land that
reflects the scale of container ships.
A wharf format has been proposed to forge an historic
connection with the wharves that surround East Darling
Harbour; to establish a pattern of building forms that face
north, rather than west; and to fully exploit the potential
enjoyment that can be derived from a landform that
engages with Sydney Harbour on a more intimate scale
than the existing reclaimed land affords.
A deliberate break from the architectural and maritime
forms that surround the site is proposed. The planning of
the proposal reflects its traditional configuration, however
the building stock needs to be clearly distinguished as
infill development within an historic site.
