It is proposed to extend the urban fabric that exists
further to the north in Hickson Road to create lively
street frontages with viable retail opportunities. This
will reconnect Millers Point with the Kings Street Wharf
precinct in a manner that reflects its history and spatial
hierarchy. To this end it is proposed that the site be
extended to include Hickson Road. If Hickson Road is
partially diverted it will allow the construction of retail
and commercial space on both sides of the street, thus
reinforcing the reintegration of the site with the city.
Transport links are germane to the proposal. A tram link to
the existing tram system at Haymarket and the long term
retention of the ferry terminal are proposed. These links
and the activity generated by the terminal will ensure that
an independent living and working community is created
that will identify with the site.
The success of a redevelopment project of this scale
is dependent on a viable local population with a sense
of identity and community. The proposal pursues these
objectives through the mix of facilities, the treatment of
the foreshore boundary and the re-integration of the site
with the city.
