The scheme also includes a detailed recreation building for
residents, linking the adjacent church to the residences. Used
for gatherings or special events such as birthdays, this partially
glazed pavilion minimises noise for residents as well as offering
a larger space. And again, mindful of reducing the physical
impact to the street, this recreation facility benefits from a gentle
curved roof that also responds to the fall in the land.
Providing residents with a variety of different environments to
enjoy with fellow residents and friends, such as the multitude
of living and dining spaces is a major step in taking aged care
forward. Having the kitchen in the basement, with meals delivered
by goods lifts to kitchenettes on the various levels, also eliminates
the need to duplicate larger kitchens on each level.
While it’s always preferred for older people to age in place in their
own homes, it’s not always possible, particularly for those requiring
assisted care. However, rather than feeling institutionalised, there’s
a sense of being in a caring and nurturing environment – one that is
secure – including a sophisticated lighting system that illuminates
rooms at night along with a number of measures that allow
for passive surveillance such as unimpeded sight lines.
And for the local residents, there’s simply a sense of a
residential development that contributes to the amenity of
the area one that ‘reads’ more as a series of townhouses
that one could easily find in a suburban street.
