Orange Courthouse
The project scope was to provide a space to
house the security scanning equipment being
deployed into all larger NSW Courthouses.
The original Courthouse is a heritage
building and adjacent to this is an extension
that is separated from the original court by
a colonnade and courtyard. Between these
buildings is the public entry to the Courts
and Registry. There was no existing space to
accommodate the scanning equipment and
protocols required and the Courts were not
fully accessible.
The need for a new space provided an
opportunity to install a grander and more
obvious public entry between the original
court and the current additions as well as an
efficient security space. Attention was given
to workflow and WHS for the security team
and rectifying some existing waterproofing
issues surrounding the new works.
With this installation all the courts could now
be accessible to current code standards.
The new glazed entry canopy allowed extra
light to penetrate into the existing drab
spaces to lift the mood. Interior works were
also completed to upgrade the waiting areas
and registry office.
The entry has clear street presence and is
human scaled and simply treated providing
a visual link and separator between the original
Courthouse and the later additions.
Construction went smoothly and was completed
on time and budget.
